DFS 101 Introduction to the Industry & Legal
This course is the foundational gateway course for students beginning their journey into the construction, inspection, code enforcement, and public safety professions. This course warmly introduces students to the purpose, structure, and importance of the construction and inspection industries, helping them understand how buildings are planned, constructed, reviewed, inspected, approved, and maintained for the protection of life, health, safety, and property.
Students will begin building a practical understanding of the major elements involved in construction and inspections, including the role of adopted codes, standards, permitting, plan review, field inspections, correction notices, approvals, and the overall code enforcement process. Through this course, students will discover that inspectors are not merely rule enforcers; they are essential guardians of public safety who help ensure that homes, businesses, and public spaces are built and maintained in a manner that protects occupants, property owners, workers, first responders, and communities.
A key focus of DFS 101 is helping students understand the legal foundation of codes and the important responsibilities carried by inspectors and code enforcement professionals.
